How to Convert a Decimal to a Percent

There are three different methods for converting decimals into percentages.

To illustrate the three methods, suppose you were asked to express the decimal 2.39 as a percent.

Method #1: Since "percent" means "per 100" or "over 100", we can multiply the decimal by 100/100 to get its "per 100" equivalent.

2.39x100=239
1100100

So we can see that the decimal number 2.39 converts to 239 per 100, or 239%.

Method #2: Since the essence of method #1 is to multiply the decimal by 100, we can simply multiply the decimal by 100 and append a percent sign to the result.

2.39 x 100 = 239%

Method #3: Since multiplying any decimal number by 100 moves the number's decimal point two places to the right, we can just move the decimal number's decimal point two places to the right and append a percent sign.

2.39
 >>
239.%

Or, as a second example, suppose you were asked to write the decimal 0.063 as a percent.

Method #1: Since "percent" means "per 100" or "over 100", we can multiply the decimal by 100/100 to get its "per 100" equivalent.

0.063x100=6.3
1100100

So we can see that the decimal number 0.063 converts to 6.3 per 100, or 6.3%.

Method #2: Since the essence of method #1 is to multiply the decimal by 100, we can simply multiply the decimal by 100 and append a percent sign to the result.

0.063 x 100 = 6.3%

Method #3: Since multiplying any decimal number by 100 moves the number's decimal point two places to the right, we can just move the decimal number's decimal point two places to the right and append a percent sign.

Change Selections

Adjust Calculator Width:

Move the slider to left and right to adjust the calculator width. Note that the Help and Tools panel will be hidden when the calculator is too wide to fit both on the screen. Moving the slider to the left will bring the instructions and tools panel back into view.

Also note that some calculators will reformat to accommodate the screen size as you make the calculator wider or narrower. If the calculator is narrow, columns of entry rows will be converted to a vertical entry form, whereas a wider calculator will display columns of entry rows, and the entry fields will be smaller in size ... since they will not need to be "thumb friendly".

Show/Hide Popup Keypads:

Select Show or Hide to show or hide the popup keypad icons located next to numeric entry fields. These are generally only needed for mobile devices that don't have decimal points in their numeric keypads. So if you are on a desktop, you may find the calculator to be more user-friendly and less cluttered without them.

Stick/Unstick Tools:

Select Stick or Unstick to stick or unstick the help and tools panel. Selecting "Stick" will keep the panel in view while scrolling the calculator vertically. If you find that annoying, select "Unstick" to keep the panel in a stationary position.

If the tools panel becomes "Unstuck" on its own, try clicking "Unstick" and then "Stick" to re-stick the panel.
